Waugh Brings Love to Bundaberg

March 4 2025

It’s always the biggest tour on the calendar for the Bulls Masters and the eighth annual pilgrimage up the Bruce Highway delivered real outcomes again for the Bundaberg Cricket Association.

The Bulls Masters were in the schools on the Friday, with Steve Paulsen and Michael Philipson going to Walkerville State School, St John’s Lutheran and St Patricks. Michael Kasprowicz and Ryan Broad went to St Mary’s Catholic Primary, Baranyan Rd State and Norville State School. Stuart Law and Chris Swan went to St Luke’s Anglican, Bargara State and Woongarra State Schools. These clinics are important parts of the Bulls Masters tour itinerary and inspiring our youth to get active and believe in themselves is a crucial element for the Bulls Masters.

The dinner at the Multiplex was sold out again with former Australian Cricket captain, Steve Waugh mesmerising the audience with his candid insights to a storied career. Queensland poet Rupert McCall is a crowd favourite when on tour with the Bulls Masters and he focused his poetry as a tribute to the 30 year anniversary of the Sheffield Shield win for Queensland. The night was capped off with some irreverent humour from the Lambassador, Sam Kekovich who shocked and humoured with his observations of Australian culture.

The night was a fundraiser for the Bundaberg Cricket Association which has so much support and with in excess of 300 strong crowd the auctions and fundraising element to the night was another huge success.

The cricket game is always hotly anticipated but so is the free kids super clinic before the game which always attracts a big turn up and this year was no different despite there being plenty of rain around during the day.

There was a lot on the line in the game with the local Bundaberg side squaring the ledger at three wins a piece last year (one wash out in previous seven games). The Bulls Masters called in the cavalry with star players Chris Lynn and Josh Brown drafted in to give some muscle with the bat. It was the ever reliable Steve Paulsen who did most of the damage for the Bulls Masters though, with good support from Michael Philipson and local young gun Sam Stuchbery to set up a competitive total of 6/149.

The Bundaberg side looked to be on track for a famous win but were pulled back late to finish short with a commendable 122. A big thanks to the young guns who joined the Bulls Masters, Kori Pope and Sam Stuchbery who provided much needed energy in the field.

A big thanks must also go to the Bundaberg Regional Council for their support in helping to put on the game, plus Devcore Property Group, Waves, Hitz Fm, McDonalds Bundaberg, Takalvans, Wessel Petroleum, Bundaberg Toyota and Rum City Foods for also supporting the tour.
